Unite Community members are invited to participate in a zoom conference that we are co-hosting with the Commission on Social Security to look into what type of social security system we want in the UK.
For too long the right and the Tory party have been a step ahead with ideas when it comes to social security. The disastrous Universal Credit was designed by Conservative MP, Ian Duncan-Smith when the Tories were not in office and implemented with devastating effect. Now trade unions and the left needs to come up with our own alternatives for a fairer and just system.
Please attend this consultation conference on Tuesday 20th October 11 – 1pm

The proposals have been made by the Commission on Social Security which is a project led by Experts by Experience i.e. people currently or recently in receipt of benefits. The Commission is keen to find out what people think of its initial ideas.
The full set of proposals are available at this link and key points include:
Replace Universal Credit with a Guaranteed Decent Income of £222 per week for a single person and £322 per week for a couple.
Child Benefit of £50 per child per week.
A completely new approach to Disability Benefit including using a social model of disability.
Cross cutting points like no sanctions, scrap the bedroom tax and more.
